Axe the Tax!

The fact is in BC the Carbon Tax has become little more than another method for the current Provincial Government to promote themselves as great environmental stewards, yet since the introduction of the Carbon Tax in BC, emissions have increased 11%. What’s more is the revenues collected by the Provincial government have now increased to $2 billion per year.

This April 1, the Carbon Tax in BC goes up to $80 per tonne versus the current $65 per tonne. That is a 23.7% increase and which translates to another nearly half a billion dollars per year into Provincial coffers. Might I also add that this is to a government who in a very buoyant economy is planning in an election year, a deficit of $7 billion dollars or as I like to think of it, adding $1296 debt to every man, woman and child in BC. WTF?

This tax just increased on April 1, 2023 where it went from $50 per tonne to $65 per tonne, which represents a 30% increase in the tax that year. So over two years the Carbon Tax will have gone up $30 per tonne or a total increase of 60% over two years. Gee, I wonder why inflation is such a sticky problem.

Does this government have any sort of clue that many BC residents are struggling as a result of inflation and increased interest rates? Does it then make sense to add to people trying to take care of their families and keep a roof on their head in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world with another tax increase? I say no it does not, in fact it is very illogical.

Fuel hits the price of everything that we see in the stores and on-line. That UPS truck sucks fuel to deliver those convenient packages and now that is going to cost everyone more. Farmers have to fuel tractors and equipment so groceries go up. Grocery stores are supplied by trucks burning diesel, so increase in the cost there. The fact is we are dependent on fuel to run our everyday lives as practically everything we utilize is somehow touched by fuel costs and they are going up.

The problem with Politicians is they believe that the taxpaying public has unlimited resources to be taxed. The opposite is true of course and it really is time we get people in government who understand how Revenue and Expense work, Inflation and Economics. When you have rising inflation like has happened and now what I call, Government generated inflation where it places its increased “needs” for cash ahead of the public’s lack of cash, it shows a true fiscal disconnect by government.

Don’t get me wrong and think that I would support the Carbon tax without an increase because I would not. It does nothing it should do, like reduce carbon emissions but it costs taxpayers a lot and now is contributing to inflation. The Carbon tax is using an environmental problem as an excuse for the Provincial government to introduce a new income tax and collect additional billions from the people of BC. In short they bullshitted all of us for their political aims, should we not be surprised?

Time to axe this tax entirely!

I agree with you. If the money was spent to actually reduced carbon output that would be one thing. Unfortunately it just disappears into general revenue and nobody knows where it goes. Just another tax!!
